The follow up to my last post The Voice of Self Doubt is coming - I promise!

In the meantime I am presenting the second post in my Take 2 series (two posts covering the same subject in a different way).

Today’s Take 2 posts both cover the “downside” of personal development, a cautionary tale if you like.

Coincidentally, both posts have seven main points.  Seven Self-Help Pitfalls by Craig Harper and How to start your own personal development cult: 7 proven success strategies by Duff McDuffee.

In the personal development world, there are so many inspiring and charismatic people who are considered not just experts but have been elevated to guru status.  Their words are so powerful, they can change your life - or can they?

You can attend seminars, workshops and huge events presented by the biggest and the best there is in the personal development arena. Plus don’t forget you have audio CDs, DVDs, books and eBooks and blogs, life coaching and goodness knows what else I have missed out.

Don’t be a sheep just following the leader. Take on board what is being offered and then be a rebel sheep and break away from the flock.

There are just so many options out there. At the end of the day everything being offered in the personal development arena is a resource - no more and no less.

You can attend, participate, listen to, and read until the cows come home and the only thing that will change is the amount of money in your bank account.

You can have “light bulb moments”, have all of your buttons pushed, be struck by revelations beyond belief and be fired up with the most amazing ideas ever.

It all amounts to nothing if you don’t actually DO anything.

    You’re right we must do.

I’m always fascinated with personal change and one of my favorite shows is The Biggest Loser I can always tell who is going to lose the most weight and do exceptionally well. Something in their demeanor changes and you see the look in their eyes. They become committed to a new way of life and then they just DO it.

    It’s inspirational.

    Hi Dr Cason
I am fascinated too with personal change and what triggers people to make amazing changes in their lives. There is something about how a person says they want to change that you “know” they are serious. We have our own version of the biggest loser here in Australia and I can certainly relate to what you are saying.

I have read that the number one reason that people can’t get “the Secret” to work for them is because they don’t understand the necessity of taking action. They don’t understand that “the Secret” was just an introduction to the Law of Attraction, and as such left a lot of things out. I also think that even when people do understand the necessity of taking action, they still have trouble doing it because they aren’t aware of all the negative beleifs they have about themself that are preventing them from getting started; and even if they are, they don’t know how to get rid of those beleifs and implant new more positive ones. Taking action is a lot more difficult than it sounds.

    Thanks for the link!

Personal Development is healthiest when coming from a place of wholeness within–in other words, when integrated with Spiritual Development.

    Hi Tracy
Self limiting beliefs can hold people back from taking action. I agree that taking action is more difficult than it sounds, however we tend to let our emotions get in the way and make it more difficult than it actually is. Taking the first step - when analysed with logic and without any emotion really isn’t that hard after all.

    Hi Duff
Good point - personal development is multi dimensional and operates at many levels.

Hi Leanne - Great point. It’s one thing listening to great advice - it’s the doing part that most people get stuck on.

    Hi Cath
Thats right Cath most people either don’t start or they make a start only to “throw the towel in” quite early on.

    Hi Leanne,

You’re right, we can attend classes, read books, listen to audio tapes, etc, but if we don’t make the choice to improve our life, it’s all for naught.

I love your quote at the end. So true!

    Hi Barbara
You mentioned classes and funnily enough I am going to be attending a “Renovate Your Life Workshop” in less than 4 weeks. So I had better take my own advice and make sure I follow up with “doing”.

I really like your honest take on the pd movement. We are such a quick fix society and so many of us believe that someone else has the answers to our own life’s questions. The big workshop/seminar pd setup relies on a kind of ‘mass hysteria’ to get everyone revved up (I believe)…then people return home full of the highs of a wonderful time and brimming with all the things they’re going to do to change their lives…then they wake up on a Monday morning and life so often resumes its old pattern.
    ‘Personal development’ never ends…it’s a lifelong journey, not a weekend, a book, a CD…

Hi Victoria - Welcome to Forever Change
You have encapsulated this very well Victoria. I am all for the workshops, seminars etc as an excellent resource and catalyst for change. In fact I am going to be attending my first workshop of that kind in about 3 weeks time. What a shame that a lot of people don’t use that pumped up high feeling and extra burst of energy that they get from the workshop/seminar etc to propel themselves forward and take action towards their goals. You are right - personal development is a lifelong journey.
